how does a diesel hammer pile driver work?

2025-05-22

Diesel pile hammers are divided into two types: barrel-type diesel pile hammers and guide rod-type diesel pile hammers.

1. The guide rod-type diesel hammer uses the plunger as the hammer seat to press on the pile cap, and the cylinder as the hammer head to rise and fall along the two guide rods.

2. The barrel-type diesel hammer uses the cylinder as the hammer seat and directly uses the extended inner wall of the cylinder to guide, eliminating the two guide rods. The plunger is the hammer head and can move up and down in the cylinder.

Working process

A modern diesel pile hammer is essentially a very large two-stroke diesel engine. The weight is the piston, and the device connected to the top of the pile is the cylinder. The hammer is first raised with a cable, and then the piston is released. As the piston falls freely in the cylinder, fuel is injected into the combustion chamber below the piston and the fuel/air mixture is pressurized. Once the piston hits the anvil at the bottom of the cylinder, the fuel/air mixture ignites, pushing the piston back to the top of the stroke. This process continues as long as the fuel is injected into the combustion chamber and the stroke is sufficient to ignite the fuel. The hammer rises to inhale fresh air and the cycle starts again until the fuel is exhausted or stopped by the pile driving team.

Main Structure

The diesel hammer pile driver mainly consists of a pile hammer, a pile frame and auxiliary equipment. The pile hammer is attached between two parallel vertical guide rods at the front of the pile frame and is lifted by a lifting hook. The pile frame is a steel structure tower with a winch at the rear to lift the pile and the pile hammer. There is a guide frame composed of two guide rods in front of the pile frame to control the direction of piling so that the pile can be accurately penetrated into the formation according to the designed orientation. The tower and guide frame can be deflected together to drive oblique piles. The guide frame can also be extended downward along the tower to drive underwater piles along the embankment or dock. The pile frame can rotate and move.

The basic technical parameters of the pile driver are the weight of the impact part, the impact kinetic energy and the impact frequency.

Pile hammers can be divided into drop hammers, steam hammers, diesel hammers, hydraulic hammers, etc. according to the power source of the movement.
